Animal Emergency #5: Rabbit Rescue

Authors: Emily Costello and Larry Day

Rabbit Rescue
Stella and her friends Josie, and Marisa were going to go to help Stella's aunt at the rodeo but Marisa's mom wouldn't let her go because she thought they were torturing the bulls . So she wouldn't take the fire-engine-red t-shirt and a walkie-talkie. They asked Jared to go instead. Stella looked up Jared's number in the phone book. He answered on the first ring and immediatrly agreed to help. The next morning Stella and Anya wented to pick up Jared. He asked where the rodeo was at. Joise said that it was at the town fairgrounds, after looking at him as if he was on another planet. When Stella and Anya were at the clinic they heard Jared on the walkie-talkie saying that they needed Anya in the practice arena right now because a horse was in serious trouble. You can read what happens to the horse and other animals when you read this book. I really enjoyed this book because of the different animals that needed to be helped. I also enjoyed the other books in the Animal Emergency series.

Around Mt Hood in Easy Stages
Published in Paperback by Lolits Press (15 August, 1997)
Authors: Sonia Buist and Emily Keller
Average review score:

A useful little book for Timberline Trail hikers
This is a useful little guidebook, rating segments of the Timberline Trail and showing an elevation profile for each segment. Nice for those of us who prefer to select our trail segments with more downs than ups when possible! Each segment has a concise summary of what you can expect to find in terms of scenery and river crossings (not to be taken lightly on Mt Hood; these aren't little babbling mountain brooks, they're raging torrents that can roll hundred pound boulders with ease). For those who are doing car shuttles, each trail is also described for clockwise and for counterclockwise hiking (relative to the entire circle of the mountain). This also creates the only disadvantage to the book, that is, it's twice as long as it needs to be due to repeating the same information in reverse sequence. Backpackers would do well to photocopy only the relevant portion and leave the book at home. The authors also suggest the preferred direction for each trail segment, which is useful. This book is worth the price.

Beauty and the Beastie (Harlequin Regency Romance, No. 159)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (October, 1991)
Author: Emily Dalton
Average review score:

Love, Scottish Style
What a fun read! The characters are well portrayed. There are two major romances going on in this story and throw the stern grandfather, Lord Ailsa, into it and you've got a good mix of romance and tall tales of Loch Ness monsters and other beasties.

Of course one of the beasties may be Lord Hastings (at least according to Felicity!). Their story is one romance. The other is Felicity's sister, Susan and Kyle, Lord Hasting's cousin.

The sisters are opposite in nature with Susan being the retiring one who becomes very clumsy when nervous-and she is plenty nervous around the stern old Lord Ailsa. But love conquers all and she learns to stand on her own two feet winning the respect and love of all her future relatives.

Felicity and Jamie (Lord Hastings) have a harder time because each is unsure of how the other feels and Felicity wants to be her own woman. Does it work out in the end?

I love how Jamie (half English) breaks into a Scottish brogue when he is feeling great emotion. My favorite quote from the book "someday I swear you'll love me as desperately as I love ye!" -- This book was a wonderful afternoon read! Don't miss it.

Beneath the Raven's Moon
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (01 April, 2003)
Author: Emily LaForge
Average review score:

intriguing modern day gothic romance
Catherine Carmichael learns that she has been named as one of the heirs in her Uncle Malcolm Blount's estate. Catherine has not seen her deranged uncle, an author compared with Poe for his horror tales, since her mother fled their jointly shared upstate New York castle over two decades ago. Though she does not need the money, the London Symphony Orchestra concert pianist is curious about her renowned relative and wants to find out anything about her father who vanished just before her mother and she fled Ravenswood Castle.

At the castle, Catherine meets three other beneficiaries, actor Everett Steele, an illegitimate cousin Billy Fortune, and her uncle's agent Madeline Treadwell. The estate lawyer Jacob Steiner plays a video in which Malcolm manipulates everyone from the grave as he did in life to play in his game of inheritance. As Everett and Catherine fall in love strange things happen as if the castle possesses an evil presence that no one can escape as the ice has stranded everyone.

BENEATH THE RAVEN'S MOON is an intriguing modern day gothic romance with an eerie Twilight Zone twist that will shock the audience. The story line has all the elements of the sub-genre so much so that readers will feel the foreboding atmosphere through Catherine's concerns and contrast that with her growing love for Everett. Though some purists may dislike the closing coil, Emily LaForge knits a delightful tale that most gothic fans will savor.

The Big Book of Crossword Puzzles : 288 Puzzles for the Crossword Fanatic
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (December, 2002)
Authors: Emily Cox, Henry Rathvon, Olivia Carlton, and J. Baxter Newgate
Average review score:

Well worth the cost.
If you like crosswords that are fun to do without resorting to stacks of reference materials, then this book is for you. Lots and lots of clever puzzels you can complete in an hour or so. One word of advice : take the first 70 or so puzzels and give them to someone just beginning to do crosswords as I found them too easy to enjoy. The other 200+ puzzels were great. These crosswords are not the brain twisters from the New York Times which require experience, determination, and research to complete. These puzzels are challenging without being frustrating. Give it a try.

Born Too Soon: The Story of Emily, Our Premature Baby
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (June, 1991)
Author: Elizabeth Mehren
Average review score:

A touching story of a mother's fight to save her daughter
This book is one of my favorites! I first heard of this book when it was published in the Reader's Digest book section (Feb 1992). After I found the full book, I devoured it. It is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read about premature babies. It has since inspired me to learn more about these precious miracles and and I am now the head of research for a non-profit preemie foundation! I would reccomend this book to anyone who loves babies! (I would give it 5 stars, but I have to reserve that for Susan Hill's book "Family", another simply beautiful book about preemies.)

A Boy Friend Is Not a "Boyfriend" (Party of Five: Claudia, No 3)
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (May, 1997)
Authors: Emily Costello and Vartkis Kinoian
Average review score:

A delightful illustration of the subtle differences.
In a world of buzzwords and hype, it's often hard to separate the true meanings from the bland hyperbole. But in A Boy Friend Is Not a 'Boyfriend', Emily Costello proves that words can never truly describe an avalanche of emotion, especially when the words are what started the avalance in the first place.

Costello weaves an insightful and provocative network of truth in this truly paradigmatic work.

No fan of Party of Five should be without a copy.

Bratz! Yasmin: The Princess Rules
Published in Paperback by Grosset & Dunlap (July, 2003)
Author: Emily Sollinger Fischer
Average review score:

Splashy first book lacks pizazz
These new coloring book sized books are great for the featured fictional stories about each girl, as well the fun activities. Yasmin's book recieves 4 stars because the variety of activity pages is lacking comparied to the others. Also, too many of the same full color pictures are repeated. What's great however, are Yasmin's personal remarks that are sprinkled throughout her book, that give a little more insight into her character. I wouldn't recommend this to pass away the summer hours (especially since it is for ages 8 and up)since the creative yet simple activities will be finished with quickly. But this book is highly recommended for Bratz fanz if you love the cute artwork of the girlz!

Bugs,Beetles and Butterflies
